Keith Olbermann Rant on Bush, Golf and War

May 14th, 2008 · 26 Comments

Keith Olberman goes off on Bush and the WarThe Wednesday May 14th 2008 MSNBC Special Comment segment audio.  Keith Olbermann comes un-glued over the recent announcement that George Bush is giving up golf.  NOTE: I included uncut the last 6 minutes or so of Keith’s editorial uncut.  The seething anger must be heard.  So much for unbiased reporting.  05/14/08

FOLLUP UP NOTE 05/15/08: - I have received quite a bit of feedback concerning the status of Olbermann at MSNBC.  That being he is strickly opinion, not news.  That might hold water if he wasn’t a central part of their election news desk.  That said, the real issue here is the disrespect to the office of the president, not the man himself.  In addition, referring to our troops as “cold blooded killers” is out of line on any news station, no matter the host status.  Reasoned debate is one thing,  this is a meltdown….btw, isn’t General Electric a war contractor…..the employer of Keith Olbermann?  Funny, but no mention of that during the 15 minute hate America rant…..Tom

As an independent, I have never been so moved by a commentary. Although an opinion of Keith Olbermann, most Americans WOULD agree as, “more than eight in 10 now saying the country is headed in the wrong direction”. Bush is a disgrace.

  • Lorraine Rivers // May 15, 2008 at 12:16 am

These 4000 lives lost are SOLDIERS in a voluntary military. They knew the possible cost of their service and yet they CHOSE to serve anyway. Olberman totally disrespects their memory in his daily diatribes against this administration and in my opinion, HE should “shut the hell up!”

  • james freeland // May 15, 2008 at 5:13 am

thank you kieth thank you Lorraine you are a very sadly misinformed individual and your post proves .People like are the reason a criminal like dictator bush can do what he wants. So you mame please and most respectfully ” shut the hell up” 9/11 was an inside job. http://www.ae911truth.org/ http://loosechange.com http://www.wearechange.org/

  • james freeland // May 15, 2008 at 5:15 am

sorry I forgot to correct my spelling errors .But the message is valid

  • Rex William // May 15, 2008 at 5:21 am

Olberman is a moron. He is so blinded by his hatred of Bush that he can’t see straight. Bush’s comment about not playing golf was not inappropriate at all. He gave a straight yes or no answer to a straight yes or no question, something that Dems are unable to do. He also answered the question about Iraqi WMD in a straightforward way. Olberman can’t handle it because he, like libs and dems, have forgotten that our gaping holes and inabilities in military intelligence back in 2001 was CLINTON’S FAULT!!! That bastard stripped us of our capabilities that might have prevented 9-11 and certainly would have given us better ground intelligence when preparing for Gulf War 2.

  • akamoke // May 15, 2008 at 5:40 am

Hmm, its easy to sit in one’s cushion and claim that soldiers went on a voluntary mission, is it too much to ask the President who sent them on a false war to give up his golfing, and why does he feel he has to announce he is giving up…GOLF?>>>, families have given up their relatives in this false war that got a lot of folks brainwashed, now the selected president is telling us he has given up GOLF!!!, really who are these 29% who gives him favorable rating..he has to go down as the worst president in US history

  • mark // May 15, 2008 at 5:52 am

    “So much for unbiased reporting.”

Um, it isn’t reporting. He isn’t a reporter. This isn’t the news. This is an op-ed show. This means there is express bias involved, express opinion. His special comment segments simply take the op-ed part to his own personal nth degree.

See, one problem we have in this country is that people, generally speaking, aren’t all that bright (or maybe they just don’t think before they speak/type), and they constantly spread this condition of theirs to others via blogs and email. This lack of thinking. This conflation nonsense. It happens on both sides of the spectrum.

This can be avoided. It starts with understanding basic facts, rudimentary concepts. These are often overlooked. It’s about taking some time to do homework, about taking some time to compose a piece of writing that makes sense, that’s at least factually accurate.

If you are going to publish a political blog, please know the basic difference between the news and opinion-editorial shows. Like Rush. Like O’Reilly. Like 100% of Air America’s programs. They are OP-ED. So is Keith’s. Get it?

  • laurie // May 15, 2008 at 8:08 am

Hi. I trust you love America as much as I do. I hope you have seen by now that resorting to calling Olberman’s commentary ‘hate America’ ranting is a running back into meaningless cliches on your part. Bush’s actions, to me, are all about hating America. Bush, to me, hates everything AMerica stands for and everything that is good about us. Olbermann may be foaming at the mouth, but when someone is destroying something you love, it tends to annoy you. ever. so. slightly.

  • barbariabatthegate // May 15, 2008 at 10:08 am

Gee, thanks, Rex William, how could I not see that Bush lying us into an endless occupation of Iraq was Clinton’s fault! Now, go bury your head back up your b**t, tune in to Rush Pflegmball, and leave the adults alone!

  • Rex William // May 15, 2008 at 10:48 am

Akamoke, you didn’t listen, did you? Bush didn’t “announce” he was giving up golf. He was asked the question “Did you stop playing golf because of the war?” To which he replied, “Yes. I think it sends the wrong message for a President to be out playing golf while our sons and daughters are dying in combat.” So, Akamoke, can you or anyone else tell me exactly what is wrong with him saying that? What did you expect him to say? “No, I quit golf because I couldn’t fix my slice?”

  • Dana // May 15, 2008 at 11:41 am

Rex William, your argument is a straw man at best. “What is wrong with him saying that?” Well, obviously nothing on the face of things.

When you look at the connotation that he has supposedly done something noble by giving up golf. He has somehow been able to sympathize with the troops because he has not played his favorite sport.

THAT is the cause of the outrage. It’s disingenuous at suggesting that the President is sacrificing for the sake of the country.

It’s not the statement itself, it’s the meaning behind the statement.

    Look deeper.

  • Truth // May 15, 2008 at 12:42 pm

“That said, the real issue here is the disrespect to the office of the president, not the man himself.” The man himself (Bush) has already disrespected and disgraced the office of president. Olbermann was just pointing that fact out.

I think the problem lies in education… those lacking it tend to stand shoulder to shoulder with our embarrassment of a president, while those holding it are angered that our wonderful country has been driven to the ground right infront of our eyes.

  • Jake // May 15, 2008 at 4:07 pm

‘In addition, referring to our troops as “cold blooded killers” is out of line on any news station, no matter the host status.’

Sorry brother, but he was referring to the administration, not the troops. That should have been apparent if you watched THEN comprehended the video.

    Better luck next time.

  • Patriot // May 16, 2008 at 6:43 am

The disrespect that Keith Olbermann shows to the office, and the man, who is the President of the United States is only overshadowed by his inadequecy to be able to provide actual news and information. Normally I would suggest he go back to doing sports, but he was horrendous at that job as well.

He comes off as a very bitter man that only adds to the deep divide with our country. We need more “uniters” and less “dividers” in our country.

If we want to “fix” what is wrong with this country, we need to start by removing Keith Olbermann from his office first!

  • Anthony // May 16, 2008 at 11:49 am

Wonder why the rating on MSNBC are down? It isn’t news, its bash the president 24/7. But, I guess this is more important than providing a variety of opinions. If you are an avide MSNBC watcher count the good news story of the extraordinary things our military is doing in both Iraq and Afghanistan. We may disagree with Bush’s (and Congress) decision to bring down Saddam but once this was done, we (with little world support) are doing whatever it takes to stabilize Iraq. The lose of 4000 lives can never be dismissed, yet the 28 million Iraqis will have a better nation primarily due to what our military is doing. Regards, Anthony

  • Ralph // May 17, 2008 at 4:25 am

C’mon - you have got to be kidding. Keith Olbermann was restrained in how most Americans feel about what the President said and the job he is doing. My question is - this should have been front page news. Why wasn’t it? Most people are FED UP with what may be the absolute worst 8 years of our nation’s history, and just want Bush to go away. Jan 09 can not come fast enough.

  • Tom Evans // May 17, 2008 at 11:13 am

Keith Olbermann’s resume qualifies him for nothing. His opinions and second guessing are speculative at best. The snippets and afterthoughts to his audience are his views. He magnifies his hate and discontent to all that will listen.I am not hesitant to say he is wrong on many issues. Mr. Olbermann was too young for the draft when he became of age. I have not researched much about him but from what I have looked at he has not served in any military capacity. Mr. Olbermann was all of 13 years old when terrorism reared its ugly head at the Munich games in 1972. Has he ranted about our marines in Lebanon who were killed in their barracks back in 1983 by homicidal bombers? Oh yeah, that 9-11 thing happened also. He was busy with sports then and I never heard him reject a government that would and did destroy their own people. Mr. Olbermann was busy getting a education provided by his local government or paid for by his parents. In either case I guess he forgot that the freedom for his education is a birth right in our nation and that people fought and died those rights. How can he be so presumptuous to know how president Bush really feels deep down inside? I wish I had the air time that he has the luxury of to debate him on some issues. I did not go to college as he did and will not pretend that I was privy to any information that the defense department did or did not know about before going into Iraq. Neither did he! Many of the same facts about Iraq were verified by the intelligence agencies of many other nations. Where was his rhetoric when the USS Cole was hit? If he lived in 1945 and was yapping about WW11 he would have scolded the United States for ending the war without consideration of the American lives that were saved when our president decided to drop bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Many Japanese people were killed in a military tactic that determined Japans surrender. The alternative to storm their shores would have been disastrous for our military with estimated losses that we could not and would not accept. Mr. Olbermann’s rant is certainly being played throughout the Arab world and probably may have converted many conservative Muslims to agree with the radical movement that will eventually cause more bloodshed in the free world. Mr. Olbermann states that Mr. Bush gave up golf to solidify with the soldiers and families that have been affected by the war in Iraq. Mr. Olbermann gave up being a sports announcer to be a political pundit and sounds as if he has been tutored by the likes of Ted Kennedy and Nancy Pelosi. You gave up a lot Mr. Olbermann. You gave up GAMES for spinning subjects that you think you know all about. Has the CIA, NSA etc.. filled you in on matters of our national security? You are a legend in your own mind SIR! I will concede the fact that the war should have been handled better. Everyone does. I see troops come and go from my work place on many occasions. I have talked to many. They do believe in what they are doing for the most part. Many volunteer to return to free people that have been oppressed, tortured and murdered for what is taken for granted in the free world that we live in. If nothing else honor that. Keith Olbermann would not be alive today by stating his opinions if he was living in a totalitarian regime. Mr. Olbermann…..Shut the hell up!!! Regards, Tom

    Keith Olbermann:

Born: Jan. 27, 1959 in New York City

In high school he worked as a play-by-play announcer for the school hockey team on WHTR under then sports director, Chris Berman.

He Graduated from Cornell University in 1979 with a bachelor of science degree in communications arts.

(79-80) He worked as a sports reporter for UPI (80-82) Sports reporter for RKO-Radio (80-83) Sports reporter at WNEW-AM (81-84) National sports reporter and anchor for CNN All in New York City

    (84) He worked as a sports reporter and anchor for WCVB-TV in Boston.

(85-88) Sports reporter and weeknight sports anchor for KTLA-TV in Los Angeles. (88-91) Sports anchor and sports reporter for KCBS-TV in Los Angeles and hosted the Keith Olbermann Show, a 30 minute Sunday night program which reviewed the week in sports. Also he provided daily sports commentaries for KNX-AM (86-91) While working in Los Angeles he received 11 Golden Mike Awards (given by the California Radio and Television News Association) for Best Sportscaster and Best Sportscast between 1982-91. Also, he was voted California Associated Press Sportscaster of the Year 3 times (85,87,89) He also won a Cable Ace Award in 1995 for Best Sportscaster.

January ‘92- Helped to launch ESPN Sports Radio serving as a weekend co-host until June 1993. He continues to provide commentaries for the radio network.

March ‘92-He joins SportsCenter and host the then 11:30 edition with tag-team partner Dan Patrick.

Oct ‘93-March ‘94-He served as a co-anchor for ESPN2’s SportsNight and then rejoins SportsCenter.

(’97) His book “The Big Show”, which he co-wrote with Dan Patrick, is released. The book offers an inside look into the making of SportsCenter as well as how Keith got to where he is today. Today Keith can be seen in the Boston Market commercials saying “Eat Something”

In June of 1997 it was announced that Olbermann would be leaving SportsCenter. There were many reasons that combined to his resignation such as his desire to live in New York City ( It was hard for him to get around in Bristol because he can’t drive due to an accident that damaged his depth perception ), his appearance on “The Daily Show” caused problems because he did not get permission from ESPiNheads to appear on the show, and his desire to take on something more serious like regular news which he will be covering on MSNBC in the fall\

From a army ranger: As a retired US Army Ranger with 3 tours in Iraq ranging from the 1st Gulf War to recent years, I can’t help but get frustrated at how ignorant some Americans are about what’s really going on over there. Everyone serving in the US Military in Iraq is a volunteer. If there were more Americans with the guts to volunteer to serve their country, they would see first hand a totally different picture from that being portrayed on our biased TV stations & other media. Though our military is trained to make the other poor dumb bastards die for their country, our combat arms people are not policemen. Yet, our politicians in Congress have once again tied our hands just like they did in Vietnam. How different is what we are doing in Iraq from what we did after WWII? As we sit in the Desert with only the BBC radio or the Anti-American Voice of America to listen to in English, we wonder about our support at home to the point that we turn off the radios. They are helping bolster the moral of our enemy more than ours. What part of that don”t they understand? Our Leaders only know what we on the front lines tell them. They make their decisions based on that information. The President, like him or not, was right on with his recent comments. So, Olbermann, stop acting like you are speaking for us all, you”re the one who needs to SHUT UP!

  • John // May 17, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Keith only put into words what virtually every person knows to be true about this president: He is one of the worst excuses for the office we have ever had.

    His malfeasance is criminal.

Keith only called it as we all see it. For those “low information voters” who are still in denial and will again vote God, guns and gays — well, Good Night and Good Luck

To the intellectually challenged Lorraine, Rex, Mark, “Patriot” and Anthony

Countdown is the intellectual answer to the FOX “News” as a whole, or hole depending on how you look at it. FOX is all op-ed, all commentary, none of which is based in fact. The difference between the opinion between Olbermann and the O’Lielly’s, Hannity’s, Hume’s, tax evading, prostitute toe sucking Dick Morris and any other right wing tools and wind bags on FOX “News” is that Olbermann is smart and actually uses fact to back up his opinion.

He wasn’t calling our troops cold blooded killers, he was calling the administration that sent them into a ridiculous war cold blooded killers. Are we really safer? Is terrorism weaker since we went into Iraq? The answer is no. If they are so concerned about Iran why would you get rid of the biggest opponent to the Shia run Iran?

    So now let’s pick apart all the right wing tool comments;

Lorraine. The 4000 volunteers you say know the risk. Most of them never thought they would be involved in an “occupation” based on misinformation and lies. Most of them are in the National Guard which is supposed to guard OUR nation, inside OUR borders, to offer assistance during national disasters inside OUR borders. The administration has used something called “stop-loss” to send these troops back to Iraq over and over again. “Stop-loss” is just a back door way of drafting these soldiers into more tours. Meanwhile this administration and your candidate McSame are against the G.I. Bill which will cost $50 billion over ten years, that’s the cost of 4 months in Iraq. The problem with spending that $50 billion is KBR and Blackwater wont make any money off it and it may actually benefit some of the middle class that this current administration is hell bent on destroying! Take your own advice!

REX! Where do I start with you? First of all, He says he stopped playing golf in August of ‘03. There’s video of him playing golf in October ‘03. Another lie. The only reason he gave up golf is because he has a strained meniscus in his knee and a lingering back problem. Have you noticed he gave up jogging too? Not bass fishing, not mt. biking and not dancing on stage in foreign countries. I’m sure that was because he doesn’t want to offend any of the grieving families. Don’t you think if he gave a crap about any of the dead soldiers he may have asked his daughter to put off her wedding for 7 months until he was out of office? Maybe he shouldn’t have joked about not finding WMD’s at the Whitehouse correspondence dinner out of respect for our dead soldiers. This administration had plenty of warnings and intelligence about the attack on 9-11, they chose to ignore it, or maybe they wanted something to happen on our soil to justify something that Cheney and Rumsfeld had been gunning for 20+ years. Pull your head out!

Mark. While you are a well spoken/typed individual, lumping Air America in with Rush and O’Lielly, is comparing apples to oranges. While they are both fruits they have very different tastes. Rush is hate, fear and smear based and Air America is intellectually and fact based. Just because you may or may not agree with them doesn’t change that they are a very different animal from Rush, Hannity, O’Rielly, etc. Use some of that intelligence to see the difference and realize that Olbermann is speaking the truth much more than it is opinion.

“Patriot”. I think it’s funny that you gave yourself that title. The most patriotic thing one can do is question authority when authority is misleading and lying to the country. The “disrespect” that Keith shows our commander and thief is well deserved and very patriotic. We need much more of Keith’s patriotism. It’s not about wearing a flag pin or putting your hand on your heart during THE NATIONAL ANTHEM (not the pledge). In fact, since the criminal and thief does wear a flag pin I think that everyone else should not wear one to send a message. I bet that flag pin was made in China! But that’s okay we can create jobs by going to drill in ANWR. Is it patriotic to go to Israel on a day that is supposed to be about celebrating the creation of Israel and talking about domestic issues? Domestic politics are to be left at the waters edge. He is a disgusting excuse for a president.

Anthony. What is news in your opinion? Try watching some BBC or CBC sometime and see what other countries report. Reporting fluff pieces, trying to paint a picture that does not represent what is happening in Afghanistan and Iraq is not journalism, putting former generals, on the payrolls of defense contractors, on air who feed us misinformation is not journalism, anything FOX “news” reports is not news. I support the troops, I want them home. Our military has been weakened by this “war” and terrorism is now stronger! Wake up, just because you don’t like what you hear, doesn’t make any less true.

Tom Evans. I thank you for your service and for cutting and pasting Olbermann’s resume. I don’t know what your point was but know this. The moral is low because our troops don’t know when they are coming home and if they do come home they don’t know how long it will be before they get “stop-loss’d” back into another tour. Enrollment is down for a reason. You are in the minority of servicemen and women who believe what we are doing is right. I have friends in the service who are disgusted by this administration but because they are soldiers they will do their duty. The op-eds of this country all speak for some, not all. He speaks for the majority unlike you.

The right wing wrongs and becoming more obvious to this country. People are fed up with the decline in the American way of life. The conservative movement is going down in flames and Keith Olbermann’s “rant” is the best summation of what has happened during this administrations last 8 years. It took balls and intelligence, a great combination in journalism, to say what he said. I salute Olbermann and everyone else who agrees with him. The elephant is going to be gunned down and everyone in this country will see that liberal is not a bad word or title, it’s about the greater good of society and if you make less than $250,000 a year and you vote for a conservative you are voting against your own self interest. John said it best stop voting God, guns and gays and vote for the important things in life.

Ryan: Instead of cutting and pasting Olbermann’s resume would you have rather me just made one up? I will not apologize for posting what his work history is. Have you been to Iraq or have you made yourself a self appointed spokesman for the troops who are there? Thanks for letting me know I am in the minority of the entire military and that for the most part morale is low because you said so. You do not speak for all either. Try and remember that please! As much as you dislike to admit it, you are not infallible. I too have friends in the military and work with them every day. I know there is plenty of room for improvement in many aspects of this administration. On behalf of all the above that you have ” enlightened” Thanks!!!

  • Ryan // May 20, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Tom: My point about you cutting and pasting his resume was that does not show anything about what you seem to think his lack of qualifications are. Everybody starts somewhere in their careers and obviously espn was a stepping stone to where he wanted to end up. Reporting is reporting, whether it’s sports, politics or the weather. Morale is low because of this administrations lack of caring about the troops. When the V.A. has been instructed to slap a “pre-existing condition” on the injured troops that says a soldier needs to prove that he didn’t have a severe limp before he had a I.E.D. blow up and handicap them for the rest of their life, and because these doctors have been instructed to do this to countless numbers of troops to save some money, that could be a reason why morale is low. Maybe morale is low because there are members of the National Guard whose houses are being foreclosed on while they are fighting a pointless war. Maybe it’s low because our government contracts out the building of barracks to KBR who cuts corners and our troops are being shocked from faulty wiring while they take showers, or that there isn’t sufficiently safe water, or armored vehicles or the countless numbers of awful things this administration has done to line the pockets of the defense contractors, Halliburton, Blackwater (some of the cold blooded killers Olbermann was speaking of). I’m happy to enlighten anyone who will listen and you are very welcome. I don’t doubt you care about the troops but tell me how the congress has tied your hands? Was it by voting for the funding of our troops once the bus had been driven into the ditch? Do you think the majority of the money that was supposed to go to our troops actually made it to them? Or did it go to the KBR’s who’s contracts are cost plus? Just because I haven’t served doesn’t mean I don’t have a clue about what is going on. I read, I listen, I think and I don’t necessarily believe what has been spoon fed to me.

So I guess if I’m the self appointed spokesman for the troops you must be the self appointed spokesman for the conservative Muslims who are converting to radical Muslims. You seem to be speaking for them just as much as I am speaking for the first hand accounts I have heard from troops who have served. How many Conservative Muslims do you know? How many Radical Muslims do you hang out with? Assuming he would be ranting about anything that happened in WWII is just dumb. WWII is a completely different animal from Iraq…SIR. Both my grandfathers served in WWII and its offensive to compare WWII to Iraq. Who cares what he was doing when this happened or that happened, it’s not his fault that HE went to college while some may have not. As far as the CIA and NSA. They where giving the right intelligence, until this administration got rid of any and all they didn’t tell them what they wanted to hear. I wish I had more time to enlighten you TOM, but I don’t. But thanks for the reply it allows some more truths to come out and what Olbermann does is not spin, we leave that to O’Lielly, Insannity, Lush and the like, what he does is comment on the truth as painful as that may be to your uninformed ears.

  • Tom // May 21, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Ryan: Once again you have missed my point. You pretend to know all that I think ( and others) because I disagree with Olbermann. You use words like “uninformed and dumb”. You do not know anything about me so go ahead and rave on. Your condescending personality says much about your character.Good luck and goodbye! You are not worth any more of my time.

  • Ryan // May 21, 2008 at 4:43 pm

I missed no points Tom, your points are just absurd. I don’t pretend to know all, I am just very informed and proud to admit it. All I needed to know from the stand point of this forum, you typed and laid out there for all to see. All the information is out there for the taking, you just have to look for it. I know I’m not infallible, you can see that from the grammatical errors in my last response, I spouted that off in 2 minutes and didn’t have time to proof read. I never claimed to speak for all, just the fair minded. Way to keep up the fight!

  • Matt // May 22, 2008 at 8:28 am

Olbermann was not referring to U.S. soldiers as “cold-blooded killers.” He had other people in mind, and if you’re willing to listen and research carefully, you can figure out who he meant.

I would take Olbermann in a second over fake patriots like Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh, who operate fraudulent “support the troops” side business to make money at the expense of our love for our soldiers.

I am genuinely sorry that soldiers deployed in Iraq feel that the U.S. media is undermining their cause. But it would be an insult to their intelligence and their honor to pretend that bullsh*t is not, in fact, bullsh*t. If they want to blame someone for creating this mess, they should look to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue…and the corporate underwriters who helped make it all happen.

  • Ryan // May 22, 2008 at 12:20 pm

Well said Matt! See Tom, another fair minded individual!
