Sen. Obama would normally not even have Secret Service protection yet, and most rallies don’t even have such screenings at all. Sen. Obama has received the earliest Secret Service protection of any presidential candidate, perhaps warranted.
Isn’t the most likely scenario that they simply don’t do that level of checking for anyone who hasn’t secured the party’s nomination, and they simply wanted to get the massive crowds into a still-not-full arena? While levels of checking in different places and at different venues may vary wildly depending on size, timeframes, etc., there are a lot of Obama rallies where there has been little to no security (in terms of searching bags and metal detectors) whatsoever. Same goes for Clinton and McCain as well.
Given that this seems to be picking up steam on the beloved internet that this is an obvious conspiracy by the “administration” (which obviously “controls” the Secret Service - *sigh*) to make it easy for Obama to get assassinated, wouldn’t a little more - oh, I don’t know - truthfulness and context be in order, given the actual seriousness of the conclusions many people are drawing from it?
This isn’t some kind of secret conspiracy to get Obama killed, or to start a “Race War” so that Bush can declare martial law and stay in office. Get a freaking grip, people. Seriously. This conspiracy garbage has got to stop, on all fronts.
And while I’m at it, can we please stop it with the ominous Dallas references? I can’t believe how such a non-story can pick up so much steam, and have so much read into it by conspiracy loons.
Many of the candidates’ speaking venues - ALL of the candidates - have had security setups in which all people are simply not checked by metal detectors, whether wand or walk-through, or had their bags searched. Should we be worried about all of those, too? What about the fact that the situation is the same for Clinton and McCain? Is it only a conspiracy because it’s a black man in Dallas?
Security does not only equal being wanded and searched. And you people who think that the Secret Service protection details are somehow politically motivated because they are operating under the Bush administration are seriously deluded, ignorant, and misguided.
I mean, wow. Just…wow. This is just getting loony, people, seriously. I can’t believe I’m even responding to this, because the true loons won’t be swayed: no amount of logic or explanation will get them to think this is anything but some kind of a plot — maybe even one purposely leaked to send the message to crazies that Obama is “fair game” for shootin’! — to get Sen. Obama killed. Let me repeat: what about all of the other rallies, both for Obama and the other candidates, that have no metal detectors or bag searches?
Is it a Secret Service/DHS conspiracy to get ALL the presidential candidates killed? Ooh, maybe then Chertoff will go after the other fifteen people in front of him in the line of presidential succession! That’s it! It’s a secret plot for Michael Chertoff to become president!
Am I being absurd? Yes. Just as absurd as the fools who honestly think that the security at the Dallas rally was intentionally lax because of some government plot against Obama. No one should be fired, and no one on Obama’s detail should go anywhere. They’re all seasoned Secret Service officers doing their job.

Somehow I didn’t notice this in your post, but unless you believe Fort Worth, TX, is “foreign”, I don’t think the Fort Worth Star-Telegram is “foreign press”. It’s a major newspaper serving the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
But, on this topic, there haven’t been mentions of the lack of metal detectors and bag searches at other rallies all over the country in any other newspapers. What made this different? A police department source telling a newspaper reported that he was “concerned” about not screening people at the arena, and an overzealous reporter leaping to conclusions and making utterly unwarranted assumptions, perhaps?
Just in case this isn’t clear yet to people, most of Obama’s other rallies haven’t had bag searches and metal detector searches for ALL visitors, either. It simply isn’t practical, and metal detectors and bag searches are the only possible things that can provide security. The misunderstandings about this just goes to show how little people understand about security, I guess. :-/
